Car Maintenance Checklist: What to Do Every 5,000 km and Every Season (2026 Guide)

Keeping your car running smoothly does not have to be complicated or expensive. Regular maintenance is the way to extend the life of your car improve safety save money on repairs and maintain good fuel efficiency.
In 2026 with hybrids, advanced engines and rising repair costs on Portuguese roads many drivers feel confused about service intervals. The old rule of changing oil every 5,000 km is outdated for modern cars that use synthetic oils. However checking your car every 5,000 km or roughly every 3 months is still an idea for key inspections and quick top-ups.
This checklist covers what you should check or do at the 5,000 km mark. Important seasonal tasks for Portugals mild winters, hot summers and rainy seasons. Everything here is simple and easy to do yourself for gasoline, diesel and hybrid vehicles.
Why Regular Maintenance Pays Off in 2026
Neglected maintenance is one of the causes of breakdowns in Europe. Checking your car every 5,000 km can prevent repairs, like a new turbo or timing belt that can cost €1,500 or more. It can also improve fuel economy by up to 10% keep you and your family safe on Portuguese roads and boost resale value when you sell on Standvirtual.
The best part is that most of these checks take, than 15 minutes and require almost no tools.
Part 1: Every 5,000 km (or 3 Months) Maintenance Checklist
Do these tasks every 5,000 km or every three months whichever comes first.

- Engine Oil Level and Condition
When you own a car it is an idea to check the engine oil level every 5,000 km. This is because even if your car can go 8,000 to 15,000 km between oil changes low oil can still cause damage.
To check the engine oil level you need to follow some steps.
First park your car on level ground.
Then wait for 5 to 10 minutes after you have finished driving.
Next pull out the yellow dipstick wipe it clean with a paper towel put it back in fully and pull it out again.
The engine oil level should be between the maximum marks on the dipstick.
The engine oil should be amber in color.
If the engine oil is very dark or gritty or smells burnt you should change it.
Action:
You should change the engine oil and filter when your cars engine oil life monitor tells you to or at the interval recommended by the manufacturer.
You can find this information in your car manual or on the sticker, in the door jamb.
If you own a car or drive short distances like many people do in Portugal you should change the engine oil once a year even if you have not driven very far.

Your tires are the thing that connects you to the road. This is really important when you are driving on Portugals highways and winding roads.
What you need to do is check the pressure when your tiresre cold. You can find the pressure on the sticker on the drivers door jamb.
You should measure how deep the tread is on your tires. You can use a coin or a special tool to do this. The law says the minimum is 1.6 mm. It is safer to replace your tires when it gets to 3 mm.
You should also look for tires that are worn out unevenly or that have cracks or bulges or nails in them.
You need to rotate your tires every 8,000 to 10,000 kilometers so that they wear out evenly.
Tip: If your tires do not have enough air in them your car will not go as far on a tank of gas and it will take longer to stop when it is raining. This is a problem, in Portugal so you should really check your Tire Inspection, Pressure & Rotation. Your tires are important so you should check your Tire Inspection, Pressure & Rotation regularly.

Modern cars with start-stop systems really drain the battery health of the car battery faster than they used to.
To do a check of the battery health you should do a few things.
First you need to open the bonnet and take a look for any green corrosion on the battery terminals.
Next make sure the car battery is securely clamped in place.
If the car battery is than three years old you should have the car battery load-tested because this will tell you the battery health. Many garages will do this for free.
If you find any corrosion, on the terminals you can clean them with a mixture of baking soda and water.
The car battery is the number one reason people need roadside assistance during the winter months. The battery health is very important.
- Brake System Quick Check
Listen for squealing or grinding when you use the brakes.
Check the brake level in the reservoir. It should be between the maximum marks.
You can also take a look at the brake pads through the wheel if you can. They should have least 3 to 4 millimeters left.
It is really important to change the brake fluid every 2 years no how much you have driven your car.
- All Fluid Levels
Open the bonnet. Check a few things:
-
The coolant level is very important during the hot summers in Portugal.
-
The brake fluid level, which we just talked about.
-
The windshield washer level. You should switch to the winter mix in October.
-
The power steering fluid level, if your car has power steering.
Also take a look on the ground under the car to see if there are any leaks.
- Air. Cabin Filter
A dirty cabin filter can cause windows and bad smells especially when there is a lot of pollen in the air.
The engine air filter affects how well your car performs and how fuel it uses.
The good news is that these filters are usually pretty cheap and easy to replace yourself.
- Lights, Wipers and Horn Test
Test all the lights on your car to make sure they are working.
Replace the wipers if they are streaked. You should do this every 6 to 12 months.
Make sure the horn is working properly.
Part 2: Seasonal Maintenance Checklist for cars in Portugal
In addition to the checks you should do every 5,000 kilometers here are some things to do at the start of each season.
In the spring from March to May do the following:
Deep clean the undercarriage of your car after the winter rain and salt.
Get the air conditioning serviced before the summer heat starts.
Check for any damage to the paint, suspension and exhaust system that might have happened during the winter.
In the summer from June to August do the following:
Test the cooling system and the coolant strength. Hot weather can be tough on your cars engine.
Check the tire pressure every week because the heat can cause the tires to expand.
Check the battery terminals often because the heat can cause them to corrode faster.
In the autumn from September to November do the following:
Get ready for the rain by putting in wiper blades and filling up the washer fluid.
Clean the leaves out of the air intakes and drains.
Test the heater and defroster to make sure they are working.
In the winter from December to February do the following:
Use the winter windshield washer fluid.
Keep the battery terminals clean because the cold weather can reduce the power.
Carry an emergency kit in your car with things like a blanket, jumper cables, a flashlight and some snacks.
Make sure the tread on your tires is good enough, for driving on roads.

Use your cars oil life monitoring system because it is smarter than changing the oil on fixed dates.
Hybrids and electric vehicles need oil changes often but they still need you to check the brake fluid and coolant and tires.
You can download an app like Car Maintenance or the app from your car manufacturer to remind you when to do these things.
Keep all the records of when you get your car serviced because it will be worth more when you sell it on Standvirtual.
